You will be expected to pay for the maintenance of your instruments, equipment and sheet music. You will also need appropriate concert attire throughout your studies, the cost of which will vary depending on what you choose. In your Spring Term, you’ll take a selection of option modules. Studying music at university gives you the opportunity to deepen your understanding of that experience and to look at how music has shaped and responded to the world. During tutorials , college subject tutors will give you and one or two tutorial partners feedback on prepared work and cover a topic in depth. The other student in your college tutorials will be from your year group, doing the same course as you and will normally be at your college.

College funds are available for instrumental or vocal lessons for those taking a performance course. Support varies between Colleges – please request details from individual Colleges. Students can also apply to take part in a Faculty-funded scheme with the Royal Academy of Music, which provides 8 hourly lessons and participation in master-classes and performance classes at the RAM. Students may choose to have instrumental or voice tuition as part of their course, though please note that performance is not compulsory.

They give us a better sense of your individuality and strengths, and allow you to find out more about studying with us. If you choose to take a work placement, it will extend your degree by a year. Work placement is not available if you’re spending a year abroad.

For programmes where you can spenda year on a work placement or studying abroad,you will receive a significant fee reduction for that year. The maximum fee that we are permitted to charge for home fee-paying students is set by the UK government. They consist of a short, informal audition as well as a sample lecture, student performances and a tour of our facilities. Through one of our contextual routes, you could receive an offer of up to three grades lower than the typical requirements. The spaces are accessible 24 hours a day and can be hired for private use.

Choose from a broad range of historical, cultural and practical options, and have the freedom to determine the balance between these different strands. Module choices include historical and cultural options such as Western music history, and practical options such as composition and performance. Year 1 includes compulsory modules and a choice of optional modules. In your second and third years you’ll choose from a wide range of options.

Careful consideration will be given to an individual’s academic achievement, taking in to account the context and circumstances of their pre-university education. Our Turner Sims concert hall supports the most extensive series of professional concerts and workshops of any UK university. You can also perform around the city in a range of different venues. Discover Uni relies on superficially similar courses being coded in the same way. Whilst this works on one level, it may lead to some anomalies. For example, Music courses and Music Technology courses can have exactly the same code despite being very different programmes with quite distinct educational and career outcomes.
